How to Save Your Laptop Battery

Many of us have been through it. That dreaded beep during a presentation or worse your computer screen blacking out. Here are a few tips to save and conserve your battery.

    Change the power settings. Obviously the first step would be changing the power settings of your battery to something like "Power Saver". This minimizes the amount of power your laptop drains from it's batteries. Note that this will most definitely reduce the performance of your laptop. Be warned!!

    Remove USB attachments. When possible, remove all USB attachments as they drain power to function even when they are not needed. The mouse, wireless receivers all drain power and can lead to disastrous results.

    Always carry a spare battery (Fully charged) or better still your laptop's AC charger.

    Plan!! When you know that carrying your charger around is going to make you look like an idiot charge your laptop then leave it off till you need it.

    Know the limits of your batteries. Battery life varies from maker to maker so it is always wise to get a feel for how long a life your battery has left.

    Try not to run graphic-intense applications or games as the video card will drain power in order to power itself up. Multi tasking can also reduce battery performance as some laptops will revert to using multiple processors to perform the tasks which in turn (you guessed it) drains more power.
